What’s In It - Natural Home And Beauty
Sunny
Side Up?
Natural
mineral sunscreens are seen as a relatively new concept by most people;
a green alternative to the synthetic chemical laden sunscreens, developed
fairly recently in response to a boom in foreign travel and a heightened
awareness of the correlation between sun worshipping and skin cancer.
Not to mention the fascination the beauty industry has shown in combating
sun related oxidative damage to skin. In fact, people in hot climes
have long used mineral rich mud and pastes as a physical block to
protect their skin from burning, and these were the ancestors of
the mineral sunblocks we know today.
Mineral
sunscreens, unlike their mainstream chemical counterparts use mainly
Zinc Oxide
and
Titanium Dioxide which act as physical blocks on the skin; each particle
acts like a tiny mirror and reflects UVA and UVB rays. Synthetic
chemical sunscreens such as Octocrylene and Avobenzone absorb UVA and
UVB and whilst are very effective 30 minutes after application, there
are now concerns regarding the long term use of these man-made chemicals
on our bodies, as we are increasingly encouraged
to protect our skin. Our mineral sunscreens combine zinc and titanium
with rich, nourishing
plant butters and oils, with added antioxidants for effective protection
within a few minutes of application.
Natural
sunscreens are particularly suitable for sensitive skin as they do
not contain harsh chemicals,
artificial fragrances, colours or parabens. Don’t be put off
by the whitish hue the higher factors can give, as at least you can
see where it has
been applied - a bonus when trying to ensure a wriggling, excited child
is fully protected! Remember to observe the basic rules for sunbathing
- applying sunscreen does not allow you to bake under a tropical sun
all day! You should aim to cover up during the hottest part of the
day and re-apply after swimming.
