What’s in season?

Get munching on UK fruit and veg in March and April 2009

What's available in May
Asparagus, broad beans, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, lettuce, mushrooms, new potatoes, rhubarb, spinach, spring greens, strawberries and watercress.

.… and June
Globe artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, broad beans, French beans, beetroot, calabrese, carrots,
early summer cauliflower, courgettes, cucumber, gooseberries, kohlrabi, lettuce, mange tout, spring onions, new potatoes, peas, peppers, redcurrants, rhubarb, savoy cabbage, raspberries, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes, turnips and watercress.

...it's sow simple
In May you can continue with successional sowings of salad crops, to ensure an even supply over the season. Sow French and runner beans, squash, cucumbers and pumpkin seeds directly into prepared beds outside (with some protection if it's still cold) or in pots if you have a slug problem. Sweetcorn resents root disturbance, so sow into coir/fibre pots or toilet roll tubes and plant out the seedling and pot when the seedling is about 6 inches high - remember to harden off if grown indoors. You can also sow leeks and chicory this month, in addition to cauliflowers and purple sprouting broccoli.

Still time for sowing some seeds in June, but time is running out so you'd better be quick! Sow beans, courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes early in the month, and more successional sowings of lettuce, salad onions, beetroot, Chinese cabbage and pak choi.

Broad Bean and Mint Salsa
This is really quick to make and so tasty. You will need:

300g of shelled broad beans
2 tbsp of freshly chopped mint
1 tbsp of olive oil
1 tbsp of lemon juice
Salt and black pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and add seasoning to taste.
