At 8th
Day Shop we buy in as much UK grown fruit and veg as we
can. Obviously this is very difficult at certain times of the year,
especially around March and April. As second choice we order
from Europe and then further afield, depending on the fruit or
vegetable and the time of year. Throughout May we ordered Italian
apples in preference to those from Argentina, but had to give in
and buy some from the latter as the Italian varieties were very
large, ‘floury’ and of poor quality. It can be an environmental
and
ethical minefield. We have recently been selling lettuces with just 4
food miles - read the piece on local suppliers.
