All you ever wanted to know about Eighth Day but were too bored to ask….…………………………………………

We are really called On the Eighth Day Co-operative Limited, but that's such a mouthful we call ourselves Eighth Day. And why the former…. "On the seventh day God rested, on the eighth day she made something better!" We started in 1970 as an arts and craft gallery up in the centre of town, but moved here in 1971 and opened a vegetarian wholefood shop and cafι - so some things haven't changed much. We are a workers' co-operative, which means the workers control the business. Any full time worker can apply to be a member, and if we like the cut of their jib, whatever that means, they get elected, get a £1.00 share in the business and a single vote. The members run the business, elect the committee and make all the day to day decisions by meeting together as one

group or in smaller committees or teams. If you don't like meetings, don't apply! We don't have a hierarchy and all members are equal and get the same pay no matter what job they do or how many years they've worked. Other jobs pay more, but just think, life without a boss! Now you know why Tim smiles such a lot.  We are independent but are affiliated to the wider co-op movement so keep in touch with our big cousins, the retail societies. They are the co-op that gave granny her 'Divi', modelled on the Rochdale Pioneers, where the members who own the business are the customers. They were set up to stop customers being exploited, whereas we were set up to stop workers being exploited, but hope in the process to be kind to customers as well!
