Supplements - the story so far

We thought it might be a good idea to let those of you that are interested know what's   happening (as far as we can understand) with regard

So now the spotlight is on Tony Blair who is actually quoted as saying that " The EU often seems to want to regulate too heavily without sufficient cause, the EU vitamin directive is a good example".
Consumers, (that means you) need to demand a national exception, so we must call on Tony Blair to re-negotiate in Brussels whilst he is in a powerful position as president of  the European Union. According to one of the worlds most respected medical researchers, Bruce Ames, "Intakes of nutrients above RDA levels tune up your metabolism and have real potential to increase longevity and reduce risk of disease."
Finally for all of you who wrote to your MP and MEP, don't despair. Slow progress is being made against the forces of unnecessary bureaucracy, no doubt manipulated by vested pharmaceutical interests. When its time to write to your MP to gain their support for the legislation to grant a national exception to the directive we will let you know.
If you want to know more, or are worried your favourite supplement may vanish, come and speak to me, Ursula, or my colleague Janet, in the shop advice corner.

to the availability of natural remedies and when and if your choices may be affected.
Firstly to summarise the major events that have taken place over the last couple of months:
The Advocate General of the European Court of Justice (EJC)  concluded  in April 2005 that the EU's controversial 2002 Food Supplements Directive was invalid. This was very good news for the health food industry and encouraging for those fighting the cause to save our supplements. Unfortunately the judges at the European Court of Justice went against the opinion delivered by the same court's advocate-general and voted in favour of the directive!
Luckily, as a result of the major drive by the health food industry over the past 3 years there are positive changes in the attitudes of politicians and regulators. In addition, because of dossiers submitted by the industry, no supplements will disappear from the shelves on the 1st of August as previously threatened.
