Eighth Day Flashbacks

Eighth Day began life as a craft exchange in the now demolished New Brown Street in the city centre 37 years ago. Things have changed considerably since then, but Eighth Day Flashbacks will give you a chance to peek into our archives to see what was happening in the good old days. If you have any funny (or for that matter serious) anecdotes or photos, don't hold back - we'll be more than willing to print them.

Above: the cover from a very old recipe book. It looks like it's come out of the ark, never mind the 70s.

Above: the shop in 1983. Enough said!

Right: rummaging through the archives just recently, we found this press release (from the early 90s) obviously designed to create some publicity by reinforcing the hippy stereotype. We're still wondering whether any of these incidents are true and certainly wouldn't be surprised if they were. We have been asked on countless occasions over the years whether we all sleep together upstairs (and as little as 2 years ago since there are now flats above us). We run a business using an alternative business model, other than that we are completely normal!

Naked Hippy Buys Bus Ticket
In the laid back early days of Eighth Day, sunny summer afternoons would often see a bored worker or two stripped off for a spot of nude sunbathing on the pavement. Rumour has it that a particularly absent minded member once neglected to put his clothes back on before setting off home on the bus. The impromptu naturism ceased when the effects of lentils in awkward places was recognised. In even earlier times embarrassing bus rides would have been unlikely, it being obligatory for all the workers to sleep together in one room above the shop. The enormous mattress everyone slept on finally became redundant in the hygienic 80s, but was put to good use at festivals folded in half as a precursor of the modern day Bouncy Castle. Coincidentally, the original recipe for Eighth Day's fairly well known vegetarian chocolate cake (sweet and sickly) evolved from "experiments" at festivals...
