Rachael
Codina
We asked Rachael to describe her work, currently
on show in the café: "My creative journey has been a
long and varied self-discovery, beginning in infancy when my parents
would take me on long rambles through the rugged English countryside.
They instilled in me a deep love and fascination of nature.
My continuous struggle
has been a self-doubting one of how can I possibly represent perfect
natural forms in my work? What can I possibly add to
their
incredible complexity and beauty? I often choose to work with the microscopic,
hidden elements or energies of the natural world. In particular, I
am interested in the continuous life-death cycle, the "dance of
nature", and the organic ageing and decay, resulting in new birth
and growth.
I love mixed media, and found, recyclable objects. Oil paint allows
me to construct rich layers of textured surfaces to express a mood or
feeling in connection with the subject, which I represent in an abstract
way. I am constantly exploring the human relationship to nature, as we
often forget or abuse our connectedness to it.
I see my art making
as a form of meditation - an opportunity to let go of the ego's critical
mind, and tap into a far deeper inner resource
of creativity."
We have
new art exhibitions in our café every month giving local artists
a chance to display their work. If you would like the opportunity to
display your paintings pop downstairs and ask for Jane in the café for
more info. If you've had lunch in the café and a piece has caught
your eye why not drop in during our quieter time after the lunch time
rush and have a leisurely coffee and browse.
