Knitting Worlds - an installation by Jacqueline Rose
Showing: Fridday 11th November
- Saturday 24th December
2011

Jacqueline
Rose has taken 3 knitting patterns from her extensive collection as the
starting
point for the silly and intriguing creation, that is ‘Knitting
Worlds’. From each pattern, she has created a 3-d domestic scene,
incorporating the original image, but which is much more alarming and
disturbing than any knitting pattern was ever supposed to be.
Each scene contains
one or two 12 inch high dolls, dressed exactly the same as the models
in the knitting patterns. Perfectly-formed doll-size
jumpers are the prime attraction, knit to scale and beautiful in their
simplicity and complexity. The setting of each knitting pattern is recreated
with props and furniture made in best ‘Blue Peter’ fashion
from bits of wood, fabric, plastic, paper and glue. Inspired by years
of Saturday mornings at her Granny’s house making doll’s
house accessories, Jacqueline Rose has created quirky domestic scenes
the dolls to inhabit. The techniques may be simple (cutting and sticking)
but the settings are anything but. Thought-provoking and hinting at the
complications domesticity can bring, each one is a delightful microcosmic
explosion of domestic tension.
Jacqueline told us, ‘I look at the patterns in detail and make
a list of all the words that spring to mind. Then I try to tell the whole
story of the pattern in just one word. From there, I imagine a scene
around that one word and start to build. I repeat this until I get to
a point where a story begins to form. With Scene 3, ‘That Sinkin’ Feelin’’,
I started by thinking the male model looked quite vain, like he was admiring
himself in a mirror. It’s a short step from there to ‘reflections’ and
from there to situating him in a fish tank.’
