HAPPY
40th BIRTHDAY
to us - 5th September 2010!
From Tuesday
31st August through to Saturday 4th September, expect daily celebrations
in the shop and café: in-house activities to celebrate
our longevity - a fantastic achievement all things considered. In the1970s
there were hundreds of tiny workers’ co-operatives that sprang
up in line with the radical mood of the times. Labour governments dabbled
with the possibilities of a new co-operative movement and gave financial
support to larger organisations. Unfortunately most small worker co-ops
were left to struggle, and they floundered.
Running
a business using the co-operative model is certainly not a piece of
cake, nor a walk in
the park (though in the early days, 8th Day members would shut up shop
and do just that if the weather was clement!) In addition, many external
factors have thwarted us: a fire on New Brown Street in the 1970s;
the forced demolition of our premises in the 2000s; the competion from
supermarkets
and their aggressive pricing policies; negative legislation affecting
the sales of nutritional supplements; recessions throughout the 80s
and 90s.
To say a
huge THANK YOU to all our customers and former members who have contributed
to our success, get ready for: special offers,
competitions, fancy dress, goody bags,
tastings, raffles, a photographic archive exhibition, celebratory cakes...
